The Hyundai Motor Group, which includes Kia, is now the fourth largest car manufacturer in the world. That's a hugely impressive achievement given that Hyundai only started building cars in 1967. The past four decades have seen the company cement a reputation for reliability and providing a lot of car for your money. Increasingly the company have been adding sophistication and class-leading technology to the mix, thereby fuelling the company's runaway success in recent years.
After a spell building Ford Cortinas under license, Hyundai produced the Pony, their first all new design, in the mid-70s. This car was designed by a team of UK designers headed by the man who brought the world the Morris Marina. The finished Pony actually bears a striking resemblance to the Marina, which was used as a reference point during its development. The Hyundai didn't suffer from any of the UK car's problems with build quality, however, and was a sales success in markets around the world helping the Korean company to power on into the 1980s.
In the late 1980s, Hyundai started to spend money on developing its own car technology. It had moved away from using other manufacturer's engines and transmissions by the mid-90s. What followed was a period of massive investment to increase the quality of the new cars that Hyundai produces. This has paid off with both huge growth in sales and increasing respect for the brand as a credible value for money alternative to the established manufacturers. In 2009, Hyundai overtook Ford to become the world's fourth largest car company.
The new 2016 Hyundai range includes the hugely sophisticated Santa Fe luxury 4x4. This comes with some of the most advanced technology on the market. The car is able to park itself and will automatically avoid colliding with other objects or leaving the side of the road.
Towards the lower-priced end of the market is the i20, whose engines are amongst the most fuel efficient available in 2016. The low running costs and reasonable nature of new Hyundai prices are still a large part of the brand's appeal, but it's the quality of the materials and the advanced technology that have taken them from one of many budget car makers to a global competitor.
They've come a long way from making their own version of the Marina using local parts.
